A crowdfunding initiative has been started for the eight women who were fired by Shoprite, allegedly for accepting tips.
The women, most of whom are bread winners, were arrested in August and charged with theft. They are now on trial.
The eight women worked as cashiers at Shoprite in Pelican Park in the Western Cape and were earning around R2400 a month. They are currently not receiving money from the Unemployment Fund because of their pending criminal case.
The initiative was started in September by Mario Segal, the founder of the non-profit group SEESworld, which advocates for workers, communities and small businesses. Segal said he started the crowd funding for the women because they are currently unemployed. “They have families to support like their children, mothers and grandmothers,†he said
Segal said whatever money came through the crowd funding would be split eight ways and given to the women weekly. He said once their weekly target of R16 000 was met they would give R2 000 to a community initiative aimed at fighting theft and drugs in the Pelican Park community.
The initiative has raised just R718 so far.
