Miners are still calling for justice in Marikana [video]

IHSAAN HAFFEJEE spent August 16 in Marikana, where friends and family of the slain mineworkers gathered to commemorate the event.

One of the miners who survived the massacre two years ago has said Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa and President Jacob Zuma should take responsibility for what had happened that day. Ramaphosa was a non-executive board member of Lonmin, the mine at which the striking Marikana miners had worked, and is alleged to have used his influence to request that government take strong action against the striking workers.

“It is my wish that the cases of our South African government, particularly those who were involved in this incident of the killing of our people in Marikana should be sent to the Hague,” he said, referring to the seat of the International Court of Justice and International Criminal Court.
