Repatriation: the road to Africa’s broken heart

    Malawi final

Thousands of Malawians were repatriated this week, adding to the Zimbabweans and Mozambicans who have already left the country because of the recent xenophobic attacks. Mike Naphane, who’s lived here for eight years, leaves behind a girlfriend and two children in South Africa.

“She wants me to go back to Malawi because she doesn’t want the locals to kill me, but she is also sad that I have to go away from her and the children,” Naphane told The Daily Vox. “I am now ignoring my girlfriend’s calls because when she calls she just cries – she can’t even talk, and this breaks my heart.”
