The ANC is not the “defender of black humanity” says author Malaika wa Azania

Everyone has something to say about Mmusi Maimane being elected to lead South Africa’s official opposition – and even those people who may disagree with his politics are jumping to his defence. But Malaika Mahlatsi, the 24-year-old author of Memoirs of a Born-Free, says she isn’t buying into the narrative being peddled by the certain members of the African National Congress (ANC) that Maimane is “a defender of white privilege–.
In a Facebook post on Monday Mahlatsi – who often goes by the name Malaika wa Azania – said the ANC is using Maimane’s appointment as Democratic Alliance leader to draw attention away from its own offences, listing the events at Marikana and the xenophobic raids among them. “Maybe the ANC must not claim “moral righteousness here,” she wrote.
