What if teachers were lauded the way sportsmen are?

A new skit from comedy duo Key and Peele speculates on the kind of world we’d have if people valued education and teachers as much as they do sports and sports professionals.

The skit makes heavy reference to American sports shows and education standards, but it still strikes a chord.

While South Africa needs between 20,000 and 30,000 additional teachers each year, only 15,655 teachers are produced through higher learning institutions annually. Of these, 25% never become teachers and a further 25% plan to work abroad immediately. One can only imagine that if teachers here were highly trained, highly valued, and highly paid we would have a totally different country.
