Kruger must stay: Steve Hofmeyr’s cry for help

    EFF Kruger

The EFF has called for the removal of a statue of Paul Kruger in Pretoria’s Church Square and a small group of conservative Afrikaners, including singers Sunette Bridges and Steve Hofmeyr, have gathered to “defend” it. The statue had earlier been defaced with green paint. Bridges had threatened to chain herself to the statue if the mayor’s office did not accept a petition calling for the protection of heritage sites.

Hofmeyr has described calls for the removal of colonialist and apartheid era statues as “nothing more than a cry for help”, but we think he’s the one crying for help in the face of a growing demand for historical redress.
