The best of South African music in 2014

In no particular order, AAISHA DADI PATEL lists what she thinks are the best seven of the best South African songs of the year

1. DJ Clock ft Beatenberg – Pluto (Remember You)

So catchy, this one had everyone humming along to it

2. K.O (Feat. Kid X) – Caracara

Even the people who don’t know a thing about South African music have heard this one. Hailed as

‘the new Nkalakatha’ (Mandoza’s smash hit) and with an accompanying dance to go with it, the line

near the end (“you can take me outta the ghetto but you can’t take the ghetto outta me”) has got

almost everyone saying PREACH!

3. Goldfish – Moonwalk Away

The duo that make up Goldfish never fail to disappoint, and there is no doubt that ‘Moonwalk Away’ was one of the finest South African musical offerings this year.

4. Matthew Mole – Take yours, I’ll take mine

The creeping gospel pop song. Everyone loves this one. And everyone loves Matthew Mole – what a cutie.

5. Jeremy Loops – Down South

Loops is an extremely gifted man – his other singles, ‘Sinner’ and ‘Skinny Blues’ have also helped to garner him quite a big following. But ‘Down South’ is a favourite; a chilled out, relaxing tune which has had many singing along to it, and therefore definitely belongs on this list!

6. Cassper Nyovest – Doc Shebeleza

Nyovest’s ‘tribute song’ to the kwaito legend Doc Shebeleza is a fitting tune. AGAIN, it’s also one of those songs that everyone just knows.

7. AKA ft K.O – Run Jozi

Described as “a street and club banger”, this is one that has got EVERYONE moving.
